Why are HVLS fans better than small fans?

HVLS fans cool in summer and circulate the air in winter: this saves considerable heating costs. The higher the building, the greater the potential energy savings.

High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans are often considered better than small fans for several reasons:

Coverage Area: HVLS fans have large diameters (typically 12 feet to 24 feet), allowing them to cover a significantly larger area compared small fans. This makes them more effective for destratification and cooling large spaces such as distribution centres, warehouses, factories, airport buildings, and agricultural buildings.

Airflow Efficiency: HVLS fans move a high volume of air at low speeds, which creates a gentle breeze over a wide area without causing unpleasant drafts. In contrast, small fans may need to operate at higher speeds to achieve a similar airflow, which can be noisy and uncomfortable.

Energy Efficiency: Despite their large sizes, HVLS fans are designed to operate at low speeds, consuming less energy compared to multiple small fans required to cover the same area. This can result in substantial energy savings over time.

Comfort and Health Benefits: HVLS fans create a more comfortable environment by evenly distributing air throughout the space, reducing hot spots and improving air circulation. This can help alleviate heat stress, improve air quality, and enhance overall comfort for occupants.

Low Maintenance: HVLS fans typically require less maintenance compared to multiple small fans. With fewer moving parts and simpler designs, HVLS fans often have longer lifespans and lower maintenance costs.

Controllability: HVLS fans, such as MonsterFans, can be activated based on temperature differences between ceiling and floor level, typically when the difference exceeds 2 Kelvin (or 2° C). Evidently, it is less tedious to attach only a few HVLS fans to the sensors and controllers than to attach many small fans to these systems.

Overall, the larger size, efficient airflow, energy savings, and comfort benefits make HVLS fans a preferred choice for cooling and air circulation in large commercial and industrial spaces. As a rule of thumb, small fans are suitable for ceiling heights from 10 feet to 15 feet whereas HVLS fans are suitable for installations of 5m to 10m.
