More than 85 years ago, company founder Günther Schwank came up with the idea of using the radiation principle of the sun to heat large buildings, which led to the creation of exceptionally efficient heating systems for industry, commerce and across a range of sectors. Even today, our most efficient radiant heaters (bright radiators & dark radiators) work with the infrared principle. Our energy-efficient heating systems of ceiling-mounted radiant heaters are used in industry, logistics, sports halls and workshops. Infrared heaters of smaller dimensions are used to heat terrace spaces and other outdoor areas of hospitality venues.

Our portfolio of efficient heating solutions extends beyond gas radiant heating products to include unique heat recovery systems, gas heat pumps, air curtains and warm air units, each providing excellent heating solutions for companies in industry, logistics and trade.

Gas Radiant Heating Systems

From Patent to Todays Most Efficient Heating Solution: Gas Radiant Heaters

We have copied the principle of Schwank radiant ceiling-mounted heating systems from nature. Infrared radiant heaters have surface temperatures of up to 900 °C. No heat is emitted into the air from this heat radiation – the infrared heater only heats surfaces.

This natural method is one of the best ways to heat halls in an energy-saving and sustainable way. With the benefit of the heat being generated by the infrared heating exactly where it is needed, a comfortable and above all healthy room climate is created economically by means of gas-fired overhead radiant heaters.

Further benefits that infrared heating offers in industry and trade include:

  • fast heating up times by powerful infrared radiant heaters
  • no dust turbulence, because no air is moved
  • warm floor temperatures
  • uniform temperature distribution by several infrared radiant heaters
  • infrared heaters work silently
  • lower power consumption than a warm air heater

Properties of Radiant Heating

Simply Explained

Why Are Ceiling-mounted Radiant Heaters So Efficient?

Heat rays from Schwank infrared heating systems travel through the air in the building with nearly no heat losses. The rays fall on the surfaces in the building and the air is heated only indirectly. This principle helps the Schwank gas radiant heating systems to save energy costs. Scientific studies prove that a reduction of air temperature by 1°C corresponds to a reduction in energy costs of 7%.

Heating Takes Place Where It Is required

Hot air rises upwards. This effect is known as thermal stratification and is the essential reason that warm air units, for instance, operate significantly less efficiently than the Schwank infrared systems. The way warm air units operate means that the expensively heated air is not fed into the common area of the employees, but rises beneath the ceiling. The heat becomes noticeable at ground level only when the majority of air in the building is heated. Schwank gas radiant heating systems work much more effectively. The heat rays travel through the air and fall on the surfaces at the ground level, where they are required. The air itself is heated only indirectly. Thermal stratification is therefore suppressed.

Preventing Heat Losses

The higher the temperature difference between two mediums, the stronger is the effort required to offset this difference. This effect is known as transmission. This also applies to the balance between the room temperature [TA] on the one hand and the outdoor temperature [TB] on the other. Owing to the targeted infrared radiation of the Schwank gas radiant heating systems, the building envelope does not get heated unnecessarily; the difference between the temperature of the outdoor air and interior air is therefore kept very low, so transmission losses are minimised.

Short Reaction and Heating Times

In contrast to central heating systems with heat transfer mediums such as water, the decentralised infrared systems by Schwank generate heat where it is required. The advantages are obvious: The transport of heat from a centralised boiler to the operation site is omitted, thereby reducing the reaction and heating times. As a result, operating times of the heating system are minimised.

No Distribution and Transmission Losses

Transport and transmission losses arise in central heating systems due to long transport routes from the heat generators to the required site and to additional transmission stations. By contrast, Schwank’s  decentralised infrared gas radiant heating systems convert the primary energy used into heat directly at the required site. Losses that occur due to the transport or transmission of the generated heat are therefore completely eliminated.

Heating Takes Place Only Where It Is Required

Schwank infrared gas radiant heating systems can be used to heat sections of the building or even individual workstations. Just like electric light, infrared heaters can be switched on and off without distributing the heat in the entire room. This ensures requirement-based heating depending on the building usage, shift times, or other similar factors. In this way, the solutions by Schwank actively spare operating costs since the most economical heating system is the one that is switched off.
