Gas-fired tube heaters operate as a decentralised system. They generate heat where it is required. A tube heater emits infrared radiation via its long radiant tube. Schwank tube heaters are characterised by innovative and detailed technological solutions and the highest “Made in Germany” quality standards. The materials used in the manufacture of these gas radiant heaters are consequently designed for durability and efficiency.

Schwank has the largest product range of infrared hall heating systems worldwide, with a strong demand for gas infrared radiant tube heaters. A Schwank radiant heating system is always adapted to the application and the individual customer requirements. Radiant tube heating systems are suitable for heating halls in industry, trade and logistics as well as for sports facilities and workshops.

Features of Tube Heaters

Gas Infrared Dark Radiators Simply Explained

Functioning Principle of Tube Heaters

Although a tube heater, as a decentralised infrared heating solution, uses the same physical principles as a luminous (or plaque) gas radiant heater, its functioning principle is different. In the case of tube heaters, the combustion of the gas-air mixture takes place within a long steel tube. This tube heats up to approximately 580 °C and subsequently emits the infrared radiation.

Decentralised radiant heating systems offer a high degree of flexibility as well as energy efficiency. For instance, separate temperature zones can be created for work stations and employee areas in warehouses while other parts of the building remain unheated. The flexibility of radiant heating can therefore have a significant cost reduction benefit.

The principle of infrared heating has been adopted from nature, because the heat rays of the sun travel through the air without heating it and emit their energy – in other words, heat – only when they fall on surfaces. The Schwank infrared heaters use the same natural technology to heat buildings in an energy-efficient manner. The infrared rays are converted into heat at the points where they fall.

With infrared gas radiant heaters, heating therefore takes place where it is required. The surfaces absorb the thermal energy and, in turn, re-emit it into the environment. This results in a balanced micro-climate made up of air and radiation heat. This reduces energy costs significantly and improves the people’s sensation of warmth. As compared to conventional systems, savings from using radiant heating generally amount to between 30%-50%.

Whisper-Jet Burner

The Whisper-Jet burner is used in all product groups apart from our recently  introduced deltaSchwank solution. Its design is a result of decades of experience in dealing with gas infrared heaters and continuous advancements. Approved technologies and knowledge have been incorporated and implemented in its conception. For instance, a pushing fan is used with the advantage that the flow characteristics of the gas-air mixture can be influenced in a better manner to ensure better heat distribution. Furthermore, components such as the fan are kept away from hot exhaust gases, which increases the life time of the product. Thanks to diverse simulations and the use of a patented Schwank ceramic plate, the Whisper-Jet burner ensures an extremely long and laminar flame. This flows axially through the radiant tube and distributes the heat uniformly. Owing to the optimisation of the flow behaviour and the use of the pushing fan, the Whisper-Jet is an exceptionally quiet burner. With approximately 46 dB[A] at a distance of 3 m, only a whisper of the burner is audible. The fully modulating burner enables an adjustment according to the actual heat requirement. This saves resources and reduces operating costs of radiant tube heating systems.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Long, laminar flame for better heat distribution over the entire device length
  • Forced draft fan for increasing the service life
  • Extremely quiet operation through optimised flow condition within the burner
  • Standard modulating operation
  • Patented Schwank ceramic plate for clean combustion of the gas-air mixture

Up to 14% Further Energy Savings Through Infrared Radiant Tube Heating Systems

Apart from the desired room temperature, the minimum outdoor temperature of the respective location also forms the basis for the calculation of the heat requirement of buildings. For instance, it is -16 °C for Munich. In order to ensure that the building maintains the desired target temperature even at these temperatures, the heating system is designed for these minimum temperatures. In other words, this means that the heating system is overactive for 95% of the time. Similar to your car, the heating system consumes the most energy under full load. Since the full output is required only rarely, full modulation offers the option of adapting the output to the actual requirement. Up to 14% of the energy can therefore be saved. Additionally, the modulation enhances comfort. While single-step solutions show severe fluctuations in the actual temperature, a fully modulating system by Schwank can be flexible in adjusting its output. As a result, the actual and target temperature lie significantly closer to each other and temperature fluctuations are avoided.

Your benefits at a glance:

  • The adaptation of fuel and combustion air to the actual heat requirement increases the overall energy efficiency.
  • The life time of heaters is significantly extended due to a reduced number of switching cycles.
  • Since there is no need to restart the system, “purging” with air is not required. This can avoid unnecessary heat losses and saves energy.
  • The lower exhaust gas temperature leads to a lower exhaust gas speed, whereby there is more time to dissipate heat from the hot gas to the device.
  • Owing to the reduced cycles, the formation of non-combusted pollutants that arise during the start-up can be reduced.
